Today more than ever, older adults are choosing to remain in their homes and age in place. My Sittee (Arabic for grandmother) lived at home until she was 95, and my husband's grandmother lived at home through age 98. As I write this, it is not lost on me that our loved ones would not have had the opportunity to age in place without the supportive care provided by family members, and the ongoing advances in assistive technology.
Today, older adults are embracing technology, with 75% of adults 65 and older using the internet. Between health-related apps, assistive smart home technologies, and service-related apps, technology has become a part of the day-to-day routines of those aging in place. These advances have led to a greater sense of safety and independence for older adults.
However, one drawback to aging in place can be a sense of social isolation and boredom. For those living with Dementia, opportunities for meaningful engagement are an essential part of a care plan.
That's where virtual field trips come in. Instead of simple entertainment, virtual field trips provide a unique way to engage the mind and spirit, fostering intellectual wellness, emotional fulfillment, and a sense of autonomy.
As an educator, I've carefully designed these journeys filled with rich content, discussion prompts, and immersive visuals. I recognize the importance of versatility and differentiation. With a wide selection of virtual field trips around the world, each trip can be selected to meet individual interests--whether that's rekindling memories of familiar places or exploring new destinations.
For caregivers these virtual field trips provide a unique way to connect with patients. For activity directors, these virtual field trips can be added to an activity schedule, allowing for an immersive travel experience in a group setting. For families, they're a bridge between generations, allowing grandchildren the opportunity to explore the world alongside their grandparents, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
All of the virtual field trips are self-paced. They can be completed at any time. They are set up in Google Slides with interactive links to videos and Google Earth 360-degree views. They also include audio on each slide. Step-by-step video and written instructions are included with every trip.
