With so many changes and uncertainty with the upcoming school year, teaching social studies will probably look a bit different. Whether you are going to be teaching in-class, using a combination of blended learning, or are completely online, I recognize that teachers need to be prepared with both print and digital options. If you are looking for a tech-infused way to teach a geography unit on the continents and oceans, I have completely updated this comprehensive unit to include both print and digital options. My goal is to make it easier to teach the major landmasses and oceans of the world, no matter what situation comes your way!
Remote Learning Components:
Google Compatible Slide Shows: This unit includes two complete slides shows with key facts and information about the seven continents and five oceans. I have made these accessible through Google Slides so that you can assign using Google Classroom.
Digital Mini Book:
As you go through the slide shows, students can fill out the information in their "mini book." A print version of this booklet is included, but I have now included a digital option. This booklet also provides an opportunity to send your students on their own research quest to find information about each continent. You can add your own requirements for each page (like find 3 facts about the Amazon River).
Drag & Drop Name the Continent Activity:
This school year, center or station activities will probably look a bit different. While this unit includes a print version of this Name the Continent activity, I have uploaded a digital option too.
Audio Book (Read Along):
This resource includes an informational book read along. An MP4 video file is included. Have your students listen to the book read aloud, or follow along with their own booklet copy. The video read along also highlights the sentences during the reading. You could use this during a listen to reading center, or assign during remote learning. This read along is a great option to meet the different learning needs of your students, while providing the same content to your class.
Differentiated Reading Passages:
This unit includes over 50 pages of reading passages and comprehension questions. A reading passage for each continent is included in 3 different levels. Have all of your students reading similar content while meeting the different learning needs of your students. I have included both print and digital options.
Fact vs. Option Sorting Activity:
Have your students read a sentence about the five oceans and determine if it is a fact or an option. Great for centers or independent learning. I have now added a drag and drop digital option for blended learning.
Map Skills:
Label the map with the continents and oceans. Several different options are included, in both print and digital format.
Additional Components:
Oceans Flip-Book:
Create a flip-book to record key facts about each of the five oceans. This resource includes several versions to meet the different learning needs of your class.
Globe Craftivity:
Create a 3D globe! Research each continent or have your students "show what they know" by filling out the globe with information about each continent.
Here's what Educators are Saying:
"Great product for my middle school ELs with learning needs. The language and content is accessible to them, and they really enjoy the activities. Thank you!"
"Excellent resource to use to help students understand map skills. Leveled passages and hands on activities are awesome!"
