If you are celebrating Grandparents Day in your elementary classroom and need a fun, but low-prep activity during your celebration, I've got you covered!
Grandparents Day was one of my favorite celebrations when I taught first grade. But it was recently brought to my attention that teachers are not finding the right craft or activity for their in-school Grandparents Day celebrations. The crafts were either too complicated and time-consuming or were just plain messy. I know teachers are busy. I also know that teachers care about making memorable experiences for their students. So with all of this in mind, I think I found a pretty good solution.
I've designed a collaborative poster project that is not only a great activity for your students to complete together with their grandparents or special guests but it can be assembled to create a whole group display!
Similar to a quilt project, each student will receive one piece of the poster. They can work together with their grandparents or special guests to color their section of the poster. To make things easy, each piece includes a template with their particular space marked, so they can see where their piece fits in the overall poster (see example picture below). Students then cut out their section after they color and write a label on the back. All of the pieces are then connected to create a large poster to display in your hallway or on your classroom door.
I've included three different size options so you can match the right one with your class size: 18 pieces (18 x 27), 24 pieces (24 x 36) or 36 pieces (24 x 36).
I've also included a one-page reading passage about Grandparents Day. Since this is informational text, which tends to have higher level vocabulary, you could have your students read this passage together with their grandparents or special guests.
As well, I've also included a printable worksheet for your special guests to "Share Something Grand." They could share a story or words of wisdom with their grandchild. Then your student will use the space on the worksheet to draw a picture depicting the lesson or words of wisdom they learned.
This entire collaborative poster kit is set up to save you time. It is truly low prep! You simply choose the size poster you need and print the pages. Your students will need crayons or colored pencils and a pair of scissors.
To assemble the poster, you can either use tape and connect the pieces on the back, or grab a big piece of butcher paper to tape down the pieces. Voila!
I hope this saves you prep time and provides a fun and memorable activity during your Grandparents Day celebration!
