An Engaging Interactive Activity to Help You Teach the Italian Renaissance

An Engaging Activity to Help You Teach the Italian Renaissance

If you are teaching the Italian Renaissance after your Middle Ages unit, this interactive virtual field trip will help you bring history to life in your classroom!

The Italian Renaissance is best taught when your students can visualize this cultural movement. During this period of time there was a renewed interest in the art of ancient Greece and Rome. Scholars and artists wanted to recapture these ancient cultures in their own way. For example, Renaissance artists focused on capturing the dignity and majesty of the human form through realistic sculptures and paintings.

Through this interactive virtual field trip, your students will get to experience some of the architecture and artistic works of this period up close using Google Earth.

Italian Renaissance Activity with Interactive Links

This virtual field trip will take your students to Florence, Italy to learn about the Medici family and tour one of their palaces--the Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens. Your students will also learn about famous artists including Giotto, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Leonardo di Vinci.

Here's the deal though. Because the art of this time focused on humanism (the human form), I did my best to make sure that all of the artistic works and links are school-appropriate. I recognize that teachers have different approaches to covering this topic, but I wanted to make sure that everything provided within the trip is school-appropriate.

This virtual field trip is structured with built-in links and response questions to keep your students accountable for their learning.

Italian Renaissance Architecture Activity with Built in Links

You can easily conduct this trip whole group by projecting the Google Slides and serving as a tour guide to navigate the 360 degree views. Or you can set this up in Google Classroom or your school's learning management system and have your students work on this independently or with partners. It's a versatile activity, so you can even leave this as sub plans.

Plus, everything is set up and ready to go to save you prep time! This is a great addition to your Italian Renaissance unit!
